History of AAUW-Saginaw

Timeline:

1881: National Organization (Association of Collegiate Alumnae) formed

1921: The Saginaw Branch of American Association of Women was formed.

1921-1922: A fund of $400 was set up for scholarships for Saginaw young women and an endorsement for a pure water project for Saginaw.

1927: The State Convention was held at the Bancroft Hotel.

1934: Pit & Balcony was formed with seed money from our branch.

1936: 238 members, 64 associates in Saginaw AAUW.

1940: Lecture Series started to raise money for scholarships

1941-1945: Members purchased $10,000 in War Bonds.

1953: The first cooperative nursery school (Humpty Dumpty Nursery School) was formed in the area. AAUW support continued into the 70’s when it became independent and continued into the 80’s.

1971: Children’s touch-and-do exhibits were developed they were called Baliwick and located in a room at the Saginaw Art Museum.

1976: Children’s theatre productions at Arthur Hill High School, Cinderella performed. We also  presented a Community Seminar-Knowledge & Power spectrum for all ages with a grant from    Michigan Council for the humanities.

1980-1985: The Book Nook at the Downtown Saginaw Mall.

1984: Participated in National Issues Forum discussing issues such as education and community.

1992-2001: Fashion Show Fundraisers were held for Scholarships.

1997: Women’s Book Project (Purchased & Donated 30 books about women to city and township school libraries)

2007-2016: AAUW Book Club – Monthly Meetings are held.

2010-2016: Farmers Market Book Sales are used to fund scholarships for Saginaw Valley State University and Delta College students.

2012-2016: Book Sales at Pay-Per-Klip used in community project funds and, book sales at the meetings of Saginaw County Association of Retired School Personnel also used for scholarships.

2014-2016: Macy’s fundraiser used for community project funds.

September 2016: Books donated to Heart of Saginaw in honor of Saginaw AAUW’s 95th anniversary.
